On Interning at Island Press: Instilling Environmental Passion

As I approached the end of my third year of college, I knew it was time to gain real experience in marketing and publicity. While searching for an internship, Island Press caught my eye because I have always had an interest in books and the environment. Even though I did not have any background in publishing, I can definitely confirm that the publicity internship at Island Press was the perfect fit for me.

I am an indecisive person. I tried almost every sport, dance, and hobby as a child. I inevitably quit all of them—except for one. Books. I love reading, and I love writing. For a good part of my life, I knew I wanted to work in the publishing industry, specifically publicity and marketing. Promoting authors while working on my own novels on the side seemed like a no-brainer. Then you-know-who became the president.

Ever since I was little, reading has been the only hobby that’s stuck around. I tried soccer, art, piano, and even basketball, but ended up eventually quitting all of those. Books have been one of the only constants in my life, which is why I always thought I wanted to go into publishing. It’s hard enough to tell people you want to go into an industry that everybody seems to think is going to disappear, but actually entering the industry itself? That’s even harder.

On Interning at Island Press: A Place United

When I graduated from my university last year, I wanted to start working in publishing, so when I found Island Press’s summer internships I signed up right away. From my first day as publicity intern, I was already mailing out advance reader copies to reviewers and reading chapters of the book I would write my first press release on. By the next week I was attending my first DTP meeting, where all the different departments of Island Press gather to discuss their concerns and progress for potential new books.

Late last year I graduated with an environmental science and policy degree, and was looking for jobs. I had already built experience in government and university settings while in school, filling temporary positions such as events outreach coordinator, and field instructor for middle school students. I’ve always been drawn to the sciences, reading, writing, and helping to promote the exchange of important research and environmental ideas.
