Forests and Protected Areas

Guidance on the Use of the IUCN Protected Area Management Categories

Protected areas are the cornerstone of virtually all national and international conservation policies. About 10% of the world’s forests are to be found in protected areas, and Forest Protected Areas make a critical contribution to conservation. The purpose of this publication is to address two questions, both of which are strategic, complex and politically significant: What is, and what is not, a Forest Protected Area? What other forms of forest protection are there, and how do they relate to Forest Protected Areas?

Covering ABS

Addressing the Need for Sectoral, Geographical, Legal, and International Integration

The most difficult and least addressed ABS implementation issue is that of coverage. On the one hand, the CBD’s ABS provisions appear to give every country full rights over all genetic resources found in the country, even if the exact subspecies or variety is also found in other countries. On the other hand, however, even within a single country, each biome may be separately regulated, and each community or landowner may be given the right to control access to and receive benefits for the genetic resources of every specimen taken from their land or sold by them.

Ideas for groundwater management

Groundwater is the earth’s largest accessible store of fresh water. The volume is almost 100 times that of surface water. In recent decades use of groundwater has grown exponentially. Over 2 billion people depend on it for their daily supply. Not only have population increases and economic growth laid claim to an ever larger share of groundwater, but the quality of the resource is also increasingly under strain. This book provides ideas on different aspects of groundwater management, ranging from areas where there is an abundance of groundwater to areas where the resource is scarce.

The Status and Distribution of European Mammals

Numerous scientific studies show that biodiversity in Europe has been declining rapidly for some time and that this pattern has been matched by the great periods of expansion and intensification of land use. This first assessment of the Red List status of Europe’s and the European Union’s mammals shows us that 15% of our species are threatened with extinction, 27% were identified as declining and another 33% had an unknown population trend.

Dolphins, Porpoises, and Whales: 1994-1998 action plan for the conservation of cetaceans

Consistent evaluation and new recommendations for action are required of protective measures to address threats that were unrecognized or non-existent until recently. Global warming, noise pollution and reduced availability of prey are now of great concern. The all too familiar threats of accidental killing in fishing gear and exposure to toxic chemicals remain almost intractable. This Action Plan reviews threats and offers possible solutions. It also contains a thorough review of the status of species and a list of 57 recommended research projects and education initiatives.

Turning the Tide

Turning the Tide

The Eradication of Invasive Species: Proceedings of the International Conference on Eradication of Island Invasives

This collection of 52 papers and 21 abstracts focuses on sharing available knowledge to combat the threat of invasive alien species. Turning the tide of biological invasion by eradicating invasive species can yield substantial benefits for biodiversity conservation. As more eradications are attempted worldwide, it is increasingly important that lessons are learned from each and every one of these attempts, whether successful or unsuccessful. This publication is intended to share with a wider audience the insights and practical experience gained.

Marine and Coastal Protected Areas, 3rd Edition

A Guide for Planners and Managers

This is a new edition of the classic textbook on marine protected area (MPA) management in the tropics, originally produced as an output of the Bali World Parks Congress in 1982. Approaches to planning and managing MPAs have evolved considerably. Major advances include innovative financing mechanisms, partnerships with the private sector and NGOs, and collaborative management between government and coastal communities.

Change

Adaptation Of Water Resources Management To Climate Change

Climate change is here and will be with us for the long term. The challenge facing water professionals is how to make decisions in the face of this new uncertainty. This book outlines a new management approach that moves beyond technical quick fixes towards a more adaptive style that is inclusive and innovative. Only by thinking, working and learning together can we tackle the impacts on water resources and uncertainties induced by climate change.

Economic Values of Protected Areas

Guidelines For Protected Area Managers

This work illustrates the potential for using valuation as a tool for diversifying the funding structure for protected areas and for providing information about stakeholders which is crucial for effective management.

Beyond Fences: Volume 2

A Reference Book

Understanding and managing the concerns of local people is essential for the success of most, if not all, conservation initiatives. These two volumes are a resource set designed to help professionals employed in conservation initiatives to identify the social concerns that are relevant for their work, assess options for action and implement them. The first volume is a companion to a process and may be used to assist in planning, evaluating or redesigning a conservation initiative. It is expected to involve a series of meetings in field-based activities.
