A Groundbreaking New Approach to Tsunami Detection and Warning

Tsunamis are infrequent but terrifying hazards for coastal communities. Difficult to predict, they materialize with little warning, claiming thousands of lives and causing billions of dollars in damage. Developing countries cannot afford costly underwater cable systems, and governments and relief organizations have been forced to rely on flawed warning systems such as deep-sea buoys. Now, a groundbreaking new approach to tsunami detection and warning, which relies on low-cost underwater sensors and networks of smartphone communication, has changed the equation.

Climate Resilience for an Aging Nation

From heat waves to hurricanes to floods, it is older adults – people aged 65 or older – who are most likely to die during natural disasters. And by 2034, the U.S. will have more people over 65 than under 18. The country is not prepared to meet the needs of older adults in the face of an increasing number of disasters fueled by a changing climate.
