For prospective authors

What kind of books do you publish?

We publish nonfiction environmental literature for scholars and practitioners in subjects like climate and energy, ecosystems, the built environment, policy, economics, and law. You can view our current catalog for a look at what we have published recently.

Should I submit my complete manuscript?

We strongly suggest that you submit a proposal for consideration before starting to write your book. This allows the editorial development process to work as intended. We will occasionally accept a full manuscript, but still require a book proposal upon submission for editorial review.

How do I submit a proposal?

If you'd like to submit a manuscript proposal, please visit our submissions page for more information and instructions.

What is your schedule for receiving proposals?

We accept proposals on a rolling basis, so you may send yours to the appropriate editor at any time.  We’d prefer a query letter first, and more information on the process can be found here.

How do I get involved in the Urban Resilience Project?

Contact Laurie Mazur for more information on how to contribute.

Can I publish an e-book concurrently?

You’re in luck. Nearly all of our books are also available in e-book format.

How do I secure permissions?

We’ve posted a sample letter for securing art permissions here, where you can also find our art quality standards and other useful information for current authors.

What tax forms should I send Island Press?

If you’re a US citizen or have a US tax ID number, we will need a W9 form. You can download and fill out the form here and read instructions on how to complete it here. If you are not, we will most likely need a W-8BEN, which you can download and fill out here with instructions here.

When will I receive my royalty/sales statements?

Once you’ve sent us your tax forms and the book is published, you will receive royalty reports at the end of September and at the end of April of each year. The fall report covers from January to June of that year, and the spring report covers from July to December of the previous year. If you have a royalty advance in your contract, you will start receiving checks with the statements once you’ve earned out the advance. If not, you’ll start receiving checks immediately, granted that they meet the minimum amount agreed upon (usually around $50).

Where do I direct people who want to use material from my book?

More information about permissions can be found here.
