The graphic adaptation of Naturalist, renowned scientist E.O. Wilson’s autobiography, has been in the works a long time, long before my internship at Island Press. Stops and starts have kept the project from moving ahead such that Ed himself has turned almost 90 years old! When I arrived at Island Press for the summer, though, it looked like—due to the hard work of everyone on the project—the pace was picking up again.

The best career advice I’ve ever received was not in fact career advice at all. It was a tweet, and it said something along the lines of ‘what you spend your time doing when you’re procrastinating, you should do for the rest of your life.’ After a brief google search looking for jobs that would pay me to binge watch Netflix, I moved onto my next, much more logical option: reading.

I have loved books my entire life, and I always knew that I wanted to pursue a career that would allow me to focus on reading and writing. As an overenthusiastic undergrad, I spent a lot of my time trying to figure out which path I wanted to follow: teaching, writing, researching, or something unrelated to English altogether; there were too many options. Then, during my junior year, I met a fellow student and former IP intern who introduced me to the world of publishing—a field that combined many of my greatest passions.
